Poem: Where is America?

One of a great many that I've written, not the best but one of the most recent. Maybe I'll post more at some point but ehhhh.

Where is America?
Is it in the bills that you hand to your local banker?
In the perfect pale smile of a plastic news anchor?
In the factories pumping out deadly weapons and tools?
Or locked in a prison system built with more care than schools?

Is it in the foreign soil we trample under our feet?
In the hungry face that you turn from on the street?
In the single father living off of underground sales?
Or in the college student with hopes of peace each time he inhales?

Is it in the supermodel cutting open her chest?
In the mid-life mother popping Xanax for stress?
In the health insurance companies controlling the nation?
Or in the poor AIDS patient who can't afford medication?

Is it in the lobbyists and other street-corner tarts?
In congressional customers who keep them close to their hearts?
In the office that looks the same regardless who wins?
Or in the donations you give to hollow media spins?

Is it in suburban suicides sweeping through your hometown?
In the flag we deify that cannot touch the ground?
In the broken-down car where a family lives?
Burn your maps and ask yourself just where America is.
