The roots stop growing once they get too close to the air.
The way the guy at the hydro shop explained it to me, is that they just turn around and start growing inward. I don't know about that, but I will after these plants finish
There's a chemical you can paint onto the inside of your pots that will make them stop growing before they get to the edge of the pot, and will make them turn and grow inward, forming a dense root ball. I forgot the name of it, I'll look it up later.
