Additional CO2 is only necessary if you're "force-feeding" your plants...usually in a hydroponic grow in an enclosed space. Gardeners increase nutrients, light, and temperature to unnatural levels and increase CO2 because these type grows will be able to assimilate it. Growing outdoors in natural conditions, added CO2 will just dissipate.

I do believe there is a benefit to communing with your garden. I often sit among my plants, talking to them, breathing their vapors and in turn, exhaling on them.
