I'm from the area where the story in the OP originated.

It's not uncommon at all for high schools to require participation in random drug testing, and many school districts allow police to use drug dogs to search the campus frequently. It's not unconstitutional, and many people who live in the region think it's justified.

Not trying to beat a dead horse here, but everyone should keep in mind that the school is operating in place of the parents of the students when school is in session. The law has developed from this conceptualization.

There are limits, but schools have more authority over students than most young people think they should.
