Sure, you can put out the bowl in between each hit by covering it with your hand or a lighter. But you could also put out a blunt between each hit and then it would not be "wasting" anything.
Bottom line: if you get high, it was not a waste.

this is just incorrect. If you smoke snappers in bowls (cleared in one hit) there should be no smoking coming off the bowl and you should be able to get all the smoke from the bud in one go. So there is no bud constantly burning or cherried like a blunt would be, hence bongs more efficient then blunts.
