Haha, this is a typical misconception I hear often. The little time that the blunt is not being hit, there is far less smoking being wasted than say a bowl. Much more smoke comes from a bowl after being hit as opposed to the very minimal amount of paper and bud that comes off the end of a blunt. A bowl, you torch the majority of it at once, whereas with a blunt or joint, the only part that is burning is the part you're inhaling into your lungs. You might lose like a half a hit while someone isn't hitting it, but probably not even.
Trust me, I have a two foot tall RooR tree perc, a silver surfer vaporizer, and I smoke mad blunts. I can tell you that each and every way has its pros and cons and none really waste more than another.
