Can I clone off a plant that is flowering?

Okay so I plan to grow me a "mamma" to keep around all winter long. So come next spring I can start off with a batch of all female clones.

My question is; Im growing from seeds right now and won't be able to tell the females from the males until they begin to flower (outdoor plants).

So come like......late Aug or Sept when the plants are already in the flower stage and I can tell for sure what ones are females......., will a clone grow? Or will it be all jacket up and just finish flowering and die?
