HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — A prisoner serving two life terms who fatally shot a Broward County Sheriff's deputy this morning while he was being transported to court was arrested this afternoon outside a Hollywood pawn shop following a massive manhunt.
The suspect, Michael Mazza, left the deputy in a parking lot of a Pompano Beach strip club at 1401 Powerline Rd. and then escaped in the department medical transport van with the deputy's weapon, sheriff's spokesman Elliot Cohen said. The van was found empty hours later about 20 miles away in Fort Lauderdale. Mazza may have planned the escape and possibly had help fleeing, Cohen said. Hollywood police arrested Mazza. He was being transported to the Broward County Public Safety Building to be interviewed by homicide detectives Wednesday afternoon, Sheriff Al Lamberti said.

"It brings closure to the family and everyone can rest now that we've done our job." The deputy, Paul Rein, 76, a career transport deputy for the Sheriff's office, had been taken to North Broward Medical Center, where he died, Lamberti said.
Rein is the fourth South Florida law enforcement officer and the third in Broward County shot in the last three months.
"The first sentiment we got was, ëOh my god not again,'" Lamberti said. "It's disconcerting. I've never seen anything like it." In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, Gov. Charlie Crist said he shared in the sorrow of Florida's "law-enforcement family."
"My prayers are with his family, his colleagues and the community he so bravely served," the statement said. "Deputy Rein devoted his career to law enforcement, facing tremendous risks each day as he served Broward County with honor and courage on the front lines. Alongside his colleagues, he willingly made sacrifices so that all Floridians can feel safe at home and in their neighborhoods. I thank all local law enforcement agencies for their efforts in bringing the violent criminal responsible into custody." Broward Deputy Maury Hernandez was shot in the head Aug. 6 during a traffic stop. He was released from the hospital Oct. 25, but suffered major injuries. A suspect was arrested.
Sgt. Chris Reyka, 51, of Wellington, was fatally shot as he was looking for stolen vehicles behind a drug store Aug. 10. His killer is still being sought.
In September, a Miami-Dade County police officer, Jose Somohano, was fatally shot by a suspect who ambushed him and three other officers with an assault weapon. The suspect was killed by officers hours later in Broward.
"This was a routine court transport. But nothing about this business is routine," said Lamberti. "You don't know when it could it be your turn. When it's the last time you might speak with a loved one." Rein had spoken with his wife, Theresa, about 10 minutes before he was shot.
Mazza, who was wearing unspecified restraints and civilian clothes, overpowered the deputy, shot him and tossed him from the van in a strip club's parking lot, Cohen said. Mazza, 40, was alone in the van with the deputy as he was being transported to court for trial on charges of bank robbery and eluding police. He already was serving two life sentences for other armed robberies, Cohen said.
"This is a man who has nothing to lose," Cohen said. He said Mazza "should be considered armed and extremely dangerous." Authorities said a witness saw Rein getting tossed out of the van in front of the strip club and that Mazza hailed a cab, which they said took him to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, just north of Fort Lauderdale.
Prison records show that Mazza has a heart tattoo on his chest with the inscription "Break this bitch." Mazza had been complaining of a back problem, which is why he was in the medical van, but it's not clear if that was a legitimate claim, Cohen said.
Traffic was backed up for miles around the scene. School officials said all Broward County schools were locked down as a precaution.
Officers from the West Palm Beach SWAT team searched an Amtrak train along the tracks at Okeechobee Blvd. and Tamarind Avenue for the suspect. Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach was temporarily locked down during the search of the train this morning, school district spokesman Nat Harrington said.
Rein has a son, Richard, who just retired from Davie Police Department, and a step son, Chris Beroldi, who is a Coconut Creek officer.
Mazza was on trial for a Feb. 28 bank robbery. After robbing a Bank of America in Coral Springs, Mazza led police on a short chase before he crashed his car into another vehicle, injuring himself and two others, authorities said.
Mazza's attorney, Maurice Graham, filed a mistrial Wednesday morning at court, where he and prosecutors listened to radio updates about the search for Mazza. Mazza's criminal record also includes probation for a drug offense and attempted robbery.
Staff writers Don Jordon and Rochelle Gilkin and the Associated Press and the Miami Herald contributed to this story.
