I would say that philosophy, on one end, is the acquisition of knowledge through somebody else's ideas. Then again, no idea can present itself so masterfully as to win the heart of anyone with reasoning any higher than that of a dumb beast, so any ideas taken in are neither accepted or discarded, but rather integrated into our own philosophy (which is usually passed down with far less grandeur). Without the recorded knowledge before us, we would be unable to integrate the ideas of great minds into our own thoughts and would be completely on our own... hm, the philosophy of true originality.
