Its wider so it can fit the perc tree. I just got one the other day and when you see it in person you can tell that a perc tree wouldnt fit in the smaller diameter tube very well. To fit a perc tree in the smaller diameter you would have to bend the tree at such a sharp angle that it would pinch on itself.
And no, the volume hasnt been a problem, but then again this isnt the tube I pull out when Im trying to take huge rips. Its more of a daily driver. If you can only own one perc the 18 is probably the best choice.
