Damn man, that sucks. I think you're overthinking things actually.
If they look good under the floro, leave them there until they start stretching. The 600w will do wonders for flowering, you just have to get through veg man. Any pics of them dying would help diagnose the problem too...
If it isn't broken, don't fix it.
