Southern Ontario Vegetable Garden Journal
Hey...
I never would have though that my second journal on these forums would be concerning the growth of vegetables.... but I figured why the hell not.
If you think that there may have been a more appropriate forum of grasscity post this in, let me know.
I live near Toronto, and last year I grew my first vegetable garden ever. I planted, sweet red peppers, hot banana peppers, beefsteak tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, and green onions.
The Tomato didn't really work... I've since discovered in reading that this was due to overwatering.
The sweet peppers didn't work either. I got maybe 2 usable peppers off of 4 plants.
All the other things worked pretty well. I've decided I like growing anything... not just pot. And.. I've learned things from gardeneing that I've been, and will be able to apply to my marijuana grows.
This year I'm going to grow two varieties of tomatos, four plants. 2 medium sized deep red tomatos from storebought seeds, and probably 2 beefsteak tomatos. I'll also be growing one plant in a pot, seperate from the garden. It'll be the medium sized deep red tomatos from seed. I Already have 4 tomato seedlings... the medium sized. I also have one more germinating because I fear that one seedling is too weak.
I'm also planting two varieties of cherry tomatos. Again two plants of each. The first strain is from seed. My friend Larry gave them to me and said they cluster like grapes. So.. for all intensive purposes, I'm calling this strain Larry's grape tomatos. The other is just storebought cherry tomato seeds. I've already got seeds germinating for all my cherry tomatos. I'll also be growing one storebought cherry tomato plant from seed in a pot.
I'm going to plant two varieties of sweet peppers. The first is a mild flavoured red pepper from storebought seeds. They're germinating right now. I'm not sure what the other'll be yet. maybe sweet bannana, maybe some orange peppers. Either way... I don't think the other variety will be from seed, as I'm running out of time for seedlings. I'll also be growing one red pepper plant from seed in a pot.
I'm going to plant two varieties of hot peppers. The first, Larry's Red Hot Peppers. Larry gave me some seeds that belonged to small red peppers with intense heat. They're germinating right now. The second will probably be hot banana peppers from transplant, unless I find some more seeds. I'll also be growing one plant of Larry's Red Hot Peppers in a pot.
I'll be growing one variety of sweet corn, four rows of four plants planted in succesion.
I'll be growing Danvers Red Cored carrots. they're medium length. 6 rows of probably 12 carrots planted in succession.
I'm going to have 2 pumpkin mounds, 2 zuchinni mounds, and 2 watermelon mounds.
I'm not going to get my hopes up on these plants, but simply do my best.
Finally I'll have stringless green beans. three rows planted in succession.
My garden is roughly 4 m by 2 m. 200" by 90"
8 sq meters. 125 sq feet.
TodayI worked in 7 bags, 210L of cow black earth. 2 Bags, 60L of peat compost and shrimp, and 3 bags, 90 L cattle manure. Only, i didn't mix in manure where I'm going too grow my carrots. too much nitrogen makes poor carrots.
Here are my garden plans. I'll post pics of my seed packages, germination, and seedlings either later today or tomorrow.
I'm so glad I took that auto-cad course. I plan to build a 3 ft high fence around the garden... It's not in the plans... but rabbits will be an issue so I've no alternative.
How high can rabbits jump? And how deep will they burrow?
The right side of the diagram points north.
