I believe it is rather shallow to look at mj. as a gateway to harder drugs. mj can be abused as any drug, or used in a responsible manner for recreation. for a younger person to want to experiment with anything self destructive, I think is a warning sign for parents or others concerned that there is a problem being dealt with incorrectly. of course, mj or any other drug isn't going to solve this problem, which will lead to other possible solutions. saying mj. lead little Billy to use of heroin is just a way of denying responsiblity. parents don't want to admit they missed warning signs, and weren't able to help their children. maybe the parents weren't even able to help, but there is still a need to blame something for Billy's use of heroin.
