It happens. I think most people here know at least one person who started smoking weed, and then moved on to other drugs. But is it common?

Also, when you say things like "weed is a gateway drug" you COMPLETELY ignore the individual's capacity for ration and decision-making. Pot is not the sort of drug that takes over your brain and makes you into a completely different person. If someone was going to do Heroin, they probably wouldn't need a "soft drug" to push them there.

Even if there was no pot, alcohol, or tobacco in the world, people would still do "hard drugs". I think it's not as much that pot causes the gateway effect, more that a certain kind of pot-user is likely to do hard drugs. Correlation doesn't necessarily imply causation.
