I can say with little doubt that it was a panic attack. I've had a few just as you described. It usually happened to me when I smoked a lot by myself. I'd start to shake, get real cold, my heart would be beating real fast. Once I thought I was losing consciousness. The first time I had one I decided to quit for a week before I started again, slowly at first but back to normal in no time.
I haven't had one in quite awhile, but the last ones I had I was able to stop within 10 minutes. You just need to find a method of recognition and a mental speech of calming yourself down. It doesn't hurt to wrap yourself in a blanket too to stop the shaking and watch some cartoons or something. Something funny that will make your mind stop racing and eyes entertained.
give yourself some time, but don't worry too much about smoking again. panic attacks are pretty simple to contain with a little practice.
