IYO...Best method to use w/ limited root space?

Hello,
In your guy's opinion, what is the best method to use when you have very limited height and room space? I'm not worried as for the plants..i can tell them where to go, but as for the roots, what is the best method to use when you dont have much space.

I'm good at improvising things to create resevoirs and stuff, but, what do you think would be best to keep the space that the roots occupy down to the lowest vertically limit possible?

I know pots need room...i know bubble set ups need room..and others need resevoirs which all use space..so when your limited on vertical space the most for where the roots occupy..what would you use?

I"m open to any ideas i guess.
