I made a visit to a local grow shop about 45mins away. This is a nice shop where they have demo grow rooms set up with demo light systems all over the place. I wanted to find out how cheaply I can get a light system. The best they can do was direct me toward 24w T5 2ft tube fixture for $32. It has no reflector so he told me I should buy 4 of these and attach to a simple piece of plywood (of course you would paint white or line with mylar first). He said this set up will get me through 6inch veg stage. He said bulbs would last years so they must be of pretty good quality. So for about $130 I can get about 100w of FL light. Anything else in the shop is easily double this price.
I forgot to ask if I can get this fixture in a 54w size. Does anyone know if I can replace 24w bulbs with 54w ones (the price difference is a few $$)? Or will I need new balasts?
I asked about replacing bulbs after veg with warm lights for flowering and he seemed to think this was a fine idea. If I do attempt to flower Im probably going to buy 4 more for the sides.
